What is the basic technique/defenition of cross stitching?

Is it the same as embroidery? What materials do you use? Can you stitch clothing patches (like the logos/pictures) using the cross sitiching method?

Anyone bind a book by hand with a sewing technique?

I am self-publishing a small poetry collection and I am ready to bind it. I wanted to use thin gauge wire and sew with a saddle stitch but would the wire tear the paper and rust? How about embroidery thread? Something low cost … broke poet here.
